The official description explicitly says you earn money while away. It does not publish the calculation, cap, pet multipliers or whether a patch changes the result.
A simple comparison
Before leaving, record the pet set and balance. On return, record elapsed time and the new balance. Repeat once without changing the base so the comparison stays useful.
